Yes, I participated in the viral facebook status. I was late on the bandwagon, because I was expecting snark, and I got it. And I love Mathew's contribution: "No one should die because they cannot afford health care. No one should go broke because they get sick. No one should negotiate their dreams. No one should watch Fox News. No one should wrestle with a pig; you get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it. No one should get out of the boat, unless they are going all the way. No one should have to see Winnie the Pooh executed by a firing squad. No one should ever have left the oceans. No one should do card tricks that reflect off their big bald head. No one should take a knife to a gun fight. No one should post this as their status for the rest of the day."

The viral part was the first two sentences, and while I find chain forwards and their ilk distasteful, I find it appalling that people make a point to jump in and disagree. True, this was generated in a time when the politics of healthcare are in the spotlight, but think about it for a second. No, healthcare isn't mentioned in the constitution. Yes, it's an enormously screwed up system. (I know; I represent two parts of the insurance-consumer-provider triad.) No, a stupid status update probably doesn't do anything towards real change. But if your knee jerk reaction to those two sentences was "why should I have to pay a cent for that?" Then I really feel sorry for you.

I saw that whole viral as an exercise to unite the opposing factions. Who would disagree with that? Yeah, how we fix/address that will be hard work, but let's start from a shared platform of "let's all agree on the above."

Yeah, except my facebook friends are passive aggressive enough not to comment on my status, and then post on THEIR status, "my take: No one should be forced to pay for the health care of other people, many of whom can afford their own insurance but would rather spend their money in more 'fun' ways. (No doubt, paying for health insurance is a boring way to spend money!)" This is also the girl who said, "Yeah, so?" on my post about Shah Rukh Khan (http://ibnlive.in.com/news/detained-because-my-name-is-khan-says-srk/99259-8.html) on Indian Independence day. Sometimes I add people from high school and then they remind me why I make a point not to!

Some of Skwid's friends (45 comments and counting) didn't much see the need to all agree on the above and went straight to "WAH WAH UNCONSTITUTIONAL! THE MEXICANS MIGHT NOT DIE! NOT FEDERAL PROBLEM!"

Whee, conflict!

Srsly, though...I even removed the viral "Make this your status update" thing from mine because I hate that shit...maybe that was part of why folks felt free to disagree? I dunno.

It was odd -- out of all the 20+ people I saw post that as a status update, yours was the only one that had any discussion in the comments.

I only saw one other person who had anything like it, and he's a Mormon. So...crazy friends.

I know what you mean. I want to bitchslap 90% of the people I went to high school with. I am STUNNED that I went to high school with them. I can't believe they're from the Chicago area. You'd think they're from some small hick town the way they talk and behave!

And don't forget "I'm not comparing the government to Nazis or anything, but OMGNAZIS!!!!!!!!!!!!1" I didn't know you could pack so many layers of cognitive dissonance into such a small space and still have room left over for facile historical comparisons and ideological ax-grinding.

Nope, that comment didn't get to me, not at all...

My last patient of the day is trying to avoid surgery, being uninsured and allergic to most anesthetics. I've still got reflux from the combination of that and having been compulsively reading the trolls all day.
